The fire station is the first MILCON project to for the garrison since the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure. The state-of-the-art facility is upgrades from a 1950s two-bay facility to a 12-bay facility. It will consolidate FGA's Fire and Emergency Services that were split between Allen Army Airfield and main post.

According to Degnan, the opening of the new fire department brings together years of preparation and planning by the Fort Greely Fire Department, Directorate of Public Works and the Army Corps of Engineers.

"It's been under construction since 2011," Degnan said. "This long-needed new building will allow the firefighters to be closer to the airfield and allow for shorter response times."
