FORT A.P. HILL, Va. -- The Army recently recognized U.S. Army Garrison Fort A.P. Hill as one of its top installations when it named the post a Bronze Medal winner in the Army Communities of Excellence competition.
Army Communities of Excellence awards have been presented since 1989. The award recognizes an installation's excellence in a providing a high-quality environment, outstanding facilities and superior services to the Soldiers, Families and Civilians who live and work there.
More than 100 U.S. Army garrisons worldwide compete for the award.
A.P. Hill won a first-place award in 2008 and third-place awards in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The Army named A.P. Hill a Top 10 finalist in 2003, the first year the installation entered the competition.
The Army also recognizes several posts with the Most Improved Installation award.
Fort A.P. Hill commander, Lt. Col. Peter E. Dargle said this year's award reflects the post's fundamental values and principles and acknowledges the professionalism, commitment and strength of the workforce and partner units who call A.P. Hill home.
"This is a great award," Dargle said. "It validates everything that our personnel do to support the Warriors who train here. I am proud to serve with, and be part of, this great Family."
Communities of Excellence awards traditionally included a cash award to the top three installations. Dargle said that, given sequestration he did not know if A.P. Hill will receive a cash award this time.
In an e-mail to Dargle, Maj. Gen. Michael S. Linnington, A.P. Hill's senior commander and the commander of Joint Force Headquarters/Military District of Washington, said the award was a great achievement and a true testament to the hard work and dedication of the A.P. Hill team.
"Fort A.P. Hill's selection from among many dozens/hundreds of excellent installation-competitors positively reflects the professionalism and commitment of your entire team to ensuring Warrior success," Linnington said.
"As Senior Commander, I'm honored to recognize your collective excellence...it's also refreshing to know the positive contributions that A.P. Hill provides to national defense is recognized by all our senior leaders, the Installation Management Command staff and units and organizations whose feedback led to your selection. I look forward to visiting again sometime soon, and awarding the bronze award."
Dargle said that Department of the Army will present the awards at a date to be determined.
