Members of the 2013 graduating class of Leadership Hardin County visited three units here on Friday, during a tour of the installation.

The tour was put together by the Ft. Knox Community Relations Office with the intent of showing key Hardin County community leaders the importance of "adopting a platoon" during deployment. The leaders visited the 19th Engineer Battalion, the Warrior Transition Battalion and the 3d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary).

"In my days as a Soldier I have been on numerous deployments to include combat operations," said John Campbell, community relations officer for Ft. Knox, Ky. on his reasoning for organizing the tour. "I have seen first-hand the effects of community support and how it can and has at times played a major role in the morale and welfare of the deployed Soldier and their Families at home."

"When I looked at unit's for the Leadership Hardin County group to see and hear from, I selected three. The 3d ESC, as it is the most recent unit returning from a deployment, the 19th Engineer Battalion as they are soon to deploy and the WTB as they are doing the right things for our wounded/ill warriors," said Campbell.

Upon arrival to the 3d ESC headquarters, the leaders were met by Col. Christopher Wicker, deputy commanding officer of the 3d ESC. They were given a tour of the building and a short briefing.

"The point of the visit to the 3d ESC was to meet the 25 members of the 2013 class of Leadership Hardin County and explain to them what our unit does and how it fits into the big picture of the Army and Afghanistan," said Wicker. "It is important for them to understand our mission so they will know how to support us as Soldiers and our Families."

Wicker continued to say, "When the community supports the deployed Soldiers, it tells the Soldier that other people, besides their chain of command, is thinking about them."

After the brief, Jackie Howard , a member of the 2013 class of Leadership Hardin County wanted to know how to do more for the Soldiers.

"I am certainly interested and willing to support our Soldiers and their Families however I can as a part of the Leadership Hardin County Program, as a corporate citizen through A. Arnold, and as an individual," said Howard.
