Post Deployment Health Reassessment (PDHRA)

What is it?

The Post Deployment Health Reassessment (PDHRA) is a health screen designed for all Soldiers – active duty, Army National Guard, Army Reserve and Individual Ready Reserve. It’s part of the Army’s ongoing efforts to protect the health and well-being of Soldiers who have been redeployed from combat for 90 days or more.

Benefits for Soldiers:
• Post-Deployment Health Reassessment identifies key readiness factors
• Screening is preventive because it sees what affects Soldier performance
• It helps you, as a leader, keep your Soldiers in their best condition
• Your Soldiers get help when they need it, even if they don’t know they need it

What has the Army done?
The Army has learned from experience. Deployment-related health concerns often evolve over time. Implemented U.S. Army-wide in January 2006, the PDHRA is a commander’s program. The Soldier speaks one-on-one with a health care provider, who then refers the Soldier for follow-up care and treatment, if necessary. For Army National Guard and Army Reserve Soldiers who complete the PDHRA at an on-site screening event, Veterans Affairs (VA) representatives there can enroll eligible Soldiers for VA health care benefits and assist with scheduling follow-on appointments.

What continued efforts does the Army have planned for the future?
The PDHRA is a health screening only. If deployment-related health issues are identified as a result of the PDHRA, Soldiers are referred for further medical evaluation. The Army’s deployment cycle support process continues to monitor Soldiers upon their return from combat, to ensure their readiness remains consistent with requirements. In future reconstitution phase activities following redeployment, Soldiers will benefit from the Army’s increased emphasis on battle buddy, Family and other social interactions, to help Soldiers identify their individual needs.

Why is this important to the Army?
The Army knows Soldiers in this era of persistent conflict are subject to tremendous pressure, extreme violence and life challenges in every form. Because the Army needs Soldiers to perform at their best, it ensures those Soldiers have every opportunity to improve their performance. PDHRA is one of the Army’s best tools for this purpose. It keeps our Soldiers Army Strong!
