Warrant Officer Education

What is it? The goal of Warrant Officer Education is to produce highly specialized experts, trainers, and leaders who are fully competent in technical, tactical, and leadership skills. Warrant Officers must be creative problem solvers able to function in highly complex and dynamic environments. They also must be proficient operators, maintainers, administrators, and managers of Army equipment, support activities, and technical systems. WO leader development is a continuous process that begins with preappointment training and education.

What has the Army done? WO Professional Military Education is being redesigned to merge the WOES with Officer Education System (OES). By integrating with the overall OES, we are able to develop and implement shared leadership education and training opportunities, while ensuring WOs receive training to attain and sustain technical skills. A needs analysis was completed and recommended the redesign of WO specific training, including pre-appointment and Military Education Level 4/1. Full implementation of an integrated OES will meet the requirements of Army Force Generation.

What efforts does the Army plan to continue in the future? The Army plans to complete the redesign and integration of WO education into OES no later than 1st quarter, 2008. The redesign will have no adverse impact on the technical education that warrant officers receive.

Why is this important to the Army? As the Army transforms, there is an expanded role for WOs. Senior leaders in the field agree that the role of WOs in the planning, preparation, execution and assessment of training should be expanded. By taking advantage of their technical and operational experience, their contributions to the combat readiness of their units can be realized. They provide specialized technical training to soldiers, especially non-commissioned officers, and provide valuable insights to commanders for collective training. WOs spend 80 percent of their careers in direct or organizational leadership positions leading Soldiers. The changes to the WO education system will help ensure they are fully prepared to execute these responsibilities.

Warrant Officers are the technical leaders in the Army that must develop and maintain technical skills regardless of rank or position. However, as WOs progress in their respective careers, leadership development is as important as technical training. This base knowledge is complemented through life long learning in institutional training complemented with operational assignments.
