Last month the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was removing Trinity River bottomland trees and brush at the foot of the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge to reduce flood risk in the city. Woody plants on the 4.7-acre parcel were ground into mulch and hauled away. At the very same time and several miles downstream, a Corps of Engineers team infused by Texas college students was doing just the opposite. They were helping upgrade habitat by planting new Texas native trees, shrubs and vines to offset the loss. This is how the mitigation process works under the National Environmental Policy Act within the Dallas Floodway Extension Project. It is part of the Corps' environmental stewardship mission.

During rescue hoist operations, helicopter pilots sometimes face the difficult task of maintaining a stabilized hover position in degraded visual conditions. When over water, the task is further complicated by the motion of the waves and the drifting of the victim(s). Maintaining a hover over the victim requires the pilot to constantly adjust the helicopter's position. These adjustments are made based on the verbal instructions given to the pilot by a crewmember.

Dennis Akins, who is paralyzed from the chest down resulting from a trampoline accident at 14, will train in a Sky Arrow 600, a light sport aircraft that is specifically designed with adaptations for hand controls to meet his special needs.

In 1996 Wilmington District biologists and engineers, with help from other North Carolina resource agencies, designed and constructed a former dredged material disposal island to offset impacts from construction of the Army Reserve Center in Morehead City, and turned it into a thriving coastal tidal marsh. Sixteen years later the marsh is a sustainable ecosystem that has exceeded the Corps' goals and expectations

Soldiers and civilians celebrated the Army Reserve's 105th birthday at First Army Division West's chapel at Fort Hood, Texas, Tuesday with a cake-cutting ceremony and singing "Happy Birthday" and "The Army Song."

The ceremony was held April 22 at the DeSoto Pastime Center. Banks' first volunteer experience occurred at Anniston Army Depot with the Camp Connection summer program.
