Even before the official March 15 opening of the Kaiserslautern Arts and Cultural Center, people at U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern were coming out to the Kaiserslautern Community Activity Center on Daenner Kaserne to shop, said Ed Codina, the center's director. The garrison's directorate of Families, Morale, Welfare and Recreation, opened the doors in early March, followed by a two-day grand opening event.

KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan -- More than two decades ago, Elizabeth Blackburn witnessed something no child should ever have to experience: the death of a parent. "When they fired off their rounds, my heart pounded; I was so frightened," said Elizabeth, recalling the 21 gun salute at her father's funeral. She was 10 years old. Soldiers in their dress uniforms, the bugler playing taps and the folded flag left a lasting impression on the young Elizabeth; one that would lead her to enlist in the U.S. Army in 1998. Now 33, Blackburn is a master sergeant.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the chapel which is adjacent to brigade headquarters Mar. 16. Ground was broken for the new facility on Feb. 12 and a little more over a month later, services are being held there.

Afghan soldiers of the Second Mobile Strike Force fired their first mortars during a hands-on mortar exercise given by the 5th Squardron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, First Armored Brigade Combat Team, Third Infantry Division. The exercise introduced them to basic concepts of how a mortar team operates. In the future, the 5-7 CAV plans to give a culminating event where the Afghan soldiers will have their own observers with their own mortar team to complete a mortar-fire mission independently.
