KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan -- More than two decades ago, Elizabeth Blackburn witnessed something no child should ever have to experience: the death of a parent. "When they fired off their rounds, my heart pounded; I was so frightened," said Elizabeth, recalling the 21 gun salute at her father's funeral. She was 10 years old. Soldiers in their dress uniforms, the bugler playing taps and the folded flag left a lasting impression on the young Elizabeth; one that would lead her to enlist in the U.S. Army in 1998. Now 33, Blackburn is a master sergeant.

In the future, the 5-7 CAV plans to give a culminating event where the Afghan soldiers will have their own observers with their own mortar team to complete a mortar-fire mission independently.
