The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's Central Readiness Force headquarters relocation ceremony was held recently at Camp Zama, Japan. During the ceremony, which celebrated the completion of the relocation of the unit from Camp Asaka in Tokyo to Camp Zama, a ribbon-cutting was conducted by Lt. Gen. Masahiro Hidaka, commander of the CRF, and Maj. Gen. Michael Harrison, commander of U.S. Army Japan and I Corps (Forward), along with the mayors of nearby Sagamihara and Zama cities.

Army to help improve installation access for Gold Star Family members

The U.S. Army Installation Management Command recently implemented a program to ensure Family members of Fallen Soldiers have easier access to Army installations. On March 14, Army installations began issuing a standardized Gold Star Installation Access Card to parents and siblings of deceased active duty Soldiers to allow unescorted access to the installation, so they are able to receive services and support.

"They -- great leaders -- are the noncommissioned officers, which serve among our armed forces, in every branch of service not only throughout the United States, but throughout the rest of the world. If you want to become a great leader, you must first become a great follower." The history of the noncommissioned officer began in 1775 with the birth of the Continental Army. The Army began to explicitly define NCO duties during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. When becoming an NCO, an individual must display their expertise in their military occupational specialty and ability to lead troops.

Janice Pagan, an automated logistical specialist assigned to Forward Support Company, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team "Rakkasans," 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), was granted a 3-day pass to reunite with her twin sister at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. "I am very excited to see my sister," said Janice. "After telling my family what is going to happen they are very happy as well." The twins have not been able to come together in more than two years due to being in different units within the Army.

Dr. Samuela Franceshini, an adjunct instructor of mathematics with University of Maryland University College-Europe, has taught Soldiers and family members since 2009 on Caserma Ederle in Vicenza, Italy. With every class she teaches, she sees students light up when they break through the fog to finally get how the numbers add up.

Pfc. Max Gibbons, 2nd Regiment, 503rd Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, was top of his class when training in the Alps with Italian forces last month and may go on to be the first American Soldier in anyone's memory to become a certified instructor this coming autumn. "I have a passion for it. There's the physical challenge, and the mental challenge. It requires total focus. It's all about problem solving and the fact that I like to do dangerous things," said Gibbons.
