FORT CARSON, Colo. -- The annual "Families First" Military Fun Night brought together servicemembers and families for an evening of games, food and relaxation at the SoutheastFamily Center/Armed Services YMCA Nov. 5.
To show appreciation for the military families in the community, the event provided a free dinner, children's activities, door prizes, entertainment and use of the YMCA facility.
November is Military Family Month, designed to recognizes those who stand with their Soldiers, said Kristen Kea, Warrior Family Community Partnership manager.
"The 'Families First' event hosted at the Armed Forces YMCA is an example of what can happen when community partners come together to celebrate and appreciate military families," Kea said.
She said the event wouldn't have been possible without representatives from Schriever Air Force Base, the Air Force Academy, Peterson Air Force Base, Fort Carson, the post exchange, the commissary and the YMCA all working together.
"We celebrate the month of November, which is the month that we honor our military forces with the 'Families First' dinner," said E.D. Rucker, Southeast Family Center/Armed Services YMCA Military Outreach coordinator.
Rucker said the event is directed toward all servicemembers and their families within the Pikes Peak region.
After the dinner, the families got a chance to explore the YMCA facility and take part in activities. A tumbling area was setup for children under age 5, while the older children got to enjoy the computer clubhouse where they were able to play games and interact with each other.
"It was a great way for families to hear about the great programs that the YMCA does in support of military families and to see their facility," Kea said. "And, it was really fun to see families taking the time to enjoy each other over a barbecue dinner and share stories with other families."
