ABERDEEN, Md. - State officials unveiled a $42.6 million road project outside Aberdeen Proving Ground today. The project is the first major infrastructure construction in anticipation of the thousands of new federal employees coming to the area under the Base Realignment and Closure, or BRAC.

Research, Development and Engineering Command Executive Deputy to the Commander Gary Martin and U.S. Army Garrison-Aberdeen Proving Ground Commander Col. Orlando Ortiz represented the installation at unveiling event. Military officials continue to coordinate BRAC with state and municipal leaders. "Aberdeen Proving Ground is grateful for this forward progress," Ortiz said. "Thank you very much. This is a good thing for all of us."

"The vast majority of this is federal funding," said Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley in a press conference near the US 40 and MD715 interchange. "They are our tax dollars at work here, strengthening the connections that allow us to create new jobs in Maryland."

Officials said the construction will "alleviate future traffic and sustain the high quality of life in the Aberdeen community." The US 40/MD 715 project will include an upgrade to a full interchange, improvements to the MD715 and Old Philadelphia Road intersection and a lane widening on MD 715 to provide improved access to the new Aberdeen Proving Ground main gate.

The BRAC process is expected to create more than 8,000 jobs at Aberdeen Proving Ground and the surrounding communities.
